# 1 in Affordable Addiction Treatment

News //

No one chooses to become addicted- it just happens. Many became addicted due to excessive and protracted prescribing of opioids by doctors and 80% of heroin users started with prescription painkillers.  But the number of people dependent on prescription opioids "painkillers" far exceeds those dependent on heroin.  Although there has been a significant contraction in the overprescribing of opioids by physicians in the last few years, the problem continues to cause deaths by the tens of thousands in the US each year.  Usually continued use of heroin or prescription painkillers is no longer euphoria (getting high) after a few months use, but rather is used to avoid "getting sick" (withdrawal) symptoms that are severe and cause enormous pain and anxiety.

By using a combination of an opioid called buprenorphine (part of Suboxone), the effects of prescription painkillers (opioids) and heroin are partially blocked, averting withdrawal symptoms, and stabilizes lives.

By using counseling along with buprenorphine treatment, the vast majority will stop using prescription painkillers or heroin and reduce the risk of overdose death, reduce risks of HIV through injection by 83%, and permit stable employment.

Algos also offers treatment for methamphetamine or cocaine dependency, and marijuana use disorder

How Suboxone Works

This video shows how Suboxone, Subutex, sublingual buprenorphine, Zubsolv, and Bunavail work in the treatment of prescription painkiller and heroin addiction.

World Class Physician

Michael Whitworth, MD with an office in Tampa, Florida  is experienced in the treatment of drug addiction, and has established an efficient and effective method of treating those addicted to opioids with an overall cost much lower than most other treatment centers.  Whereas the goal is to eliminate all opioids and achieve cessation of major illicit drugs, nationally only 1/3 are capable of sustaining long term abstinence without continued use of buprenorphine . Therefore buprenorphine treatment using Suboxone or equivalent may be necessary long term in some patients.

WE PRESCRIBE:

1. Buprenorphine sublingual tablets if appropriate for our patients, being far less expensive than other buprenorphine products.

2. Suboxone/Bunavail/Zubsolv- combination buprenorphine/naloxone sublingual films and tablets.

3. Probuphine implants- a 6 month implant for those on very low doses of buprenorphine

4. Sublocade- subcutaneous injections monthly of buprenorphine

5. Vivatrol- a monthly injection of naltrexone, an antagonist that blocks the effects of opioids

6. Oral Naltrexone- every other day dosing of this inexpensive oral medication blocks opioid effects.

Dr. Whitworth is proud to serve Oldsmar, Westchase, Town and Country, Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Keystone, East Lake, Palm Harbor, Largo, & Seminole and surrounding areas.

NOTE: WE DO NOT PREAUTHORIZE MEDICAID PRESCRIPTIONS.

Heroin Induced Illnesses

The x-ray shows pulmonary edema or massive fluid in the lungs that can be caused by shooting up or snorting heroin with its impurities.  This can lead to death with one use of the drug.  Heroin is frequently adulterated with fentanyl or one of the W compounds that are hundreds of times more potent than morphine, leading to cessation of breathing and death.  Heroin may also cause liver failure, endocarditis (infection and dysfunction of the valves of the heart) in addition to the risk of HIV from needle sharing. It is extremely important to find ways to cease using heroin because of all of these serious health concerns.
