Acute Pain Treatment

Pain of a sudden onset such as with injuries, burns, gastrointestinal, migraines, trauma, or other rapid onset types is termed acute pain.  Algos is not an emergency room and lacks the laboratory and imaging capabilities to determine the causes of many types of acute pain, therefore in instances of the initial onset (first occurrence) we always recommend being seen by an Emergency Department of a hospital or an urgent care center.  However if there are some situations that Algos does offer treatment of acute pain, especially if it is recurring pain that is well known to the patient, such as migraine headaches, sprained muscles/ligaments/tendons.

Algos offers local anesthetic + steroid injections for sprained ligaments, torn muscles, sprained ligaments, etc.  We also have intramuscular injections of ketorolac (Toradol) as a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine.  Additionally, we do have the capability of delivering nalbuphine (Nubain), an injectable opioid narcotic for those who have a driver and for those that are not currently taking opioids within the past 3 days. Orphenadrine (Norflex) is an injectable "muscle relaxant" that may be useful for muscle pain and certain types of central pain (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15553107)

We also offer some prescription medications for acute pain when indicated.  For those without active cancer we prescribe buprenorphine, codeine, tramadol, pentazocine, or dihydrocodeine for severe acute pain.

After hours treatment charges apply when outside of scheduled hours, and can only be available after 6 pm on weekdays and on weekends.
